Introduction

  • Pastor celebrated 4,000 first-time decisions for Christ during the recent “At the Movies” series and called new believers to their next step: water baptism–“the starting line, not the finish line.”
  • Launches “Fight the Good Fight,” a nine-week verse-by-verse walk through 2 Timothy, shifting the church from “reaching wide” to “growing deep”–the church is “not in the crowd business but in the disciple business,” and disciples love the Word of God.
  • Today’s text, 2 Timothy 1:1-5, opens Paul’s final letter, written from the Mamertine Prison in Rome to his “dear son” Timothy.
  • Big idea: to one day say “I have fought the good fight,” we must walk as disciples–taking concrete steps, rooted in mentoring relationships, family faith, and the secure love of our heavenly Father.

Key Points / Exposition

1. It Takes a Spiritual Father or Mother

  • Paul, once a fierce persecutor, became Timothy’s mentor and calls him “my dear son”; he also called Titus and Onesimus his sons in the faith.
  • Their bond formed on mission: Paul first met Timothy at Lystra (Acts 14-16), where Paul was stoned and left for dead; Timothy saw his courage and later joined him.
  • Paul prayed for Timothy “night and day” and affirmed his calling with tears and the laying on of hands.
  • Illustration: the pastor’s own mentor, Jeff Carlisle, discipled him through Scripture, everyday life, and first preaching opportunities–and even introduced him to his wife.
  • Invitation: find this kind of relationship through Life Groups and the ten-week Rooted discipleship experience (text ROOTED to 20411).

2. It Takes a Godly Family

  • Timothy’s father was absent, but his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois passed on a “sincere faith” (2 Timothy 1:5).
  • Single moms were honored; God often works powerfully through imperfect family situations.
  • The world is a battleground, not a playground: when God starts a family (Genesis 2), Satan begins a fight against it (Genesis 3), and the enemy still targets believers’ children (Revelation 12:17).
  • Practical counsel for parents:
    • Prioritize eternal things over sports and activities–.02% of kids become professional athletes; 100% will stand before Jesus.
    • Steward influences: monitor music, screens, and friendships rather than leaving them unrestricted.
    • Embed children in a redeemed village–the local church–with godly mentors.
    • Fathers: sociologists found the number-one determiner of children keeping their parents’ faith is the warmth of the father toward them combined with his genuine love for Jesus–fight for their hearts.

3. It Takes Faith in a Heavenly Father

  • Paul blesses Timothy with “grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord” (2 Timothy 1:2).
  • Mercy is not getting the bad we deserve; grace is receiving the good we don’t deserve; peace is wholeness that comes only from the Prince of Peace, not perfect circumstances.
  • “There is more mercy in God than sin in you.”
  • Security in these truths frees us from pretending and performing; God gives “a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7).
  • The sermon closed with a gospel invitation (Romans 6:23), and many responded in prayer.

Major Lessons & Revelations

  • Jesus commissions disciples, not crowds; discipleship is impossible without movement–you cannot follow someone and stand still at the same time.
  • Even chained in a Roman prison, Paul declares “the word of God is not bound” (2 Timothy 2:9)–the gospel is unstoppable.
  • The gospel transforms whole cities: so many were saved in Ephesus that idol-making and immoral industries suffered financially.
  • God often raises courageous disciples out of imperfect families and absent-father homes.
  • The Father’s grace, mercy, and peace–not our performance–are the secure foundation of the disciple’s life.

Practical Application

  • Take the baptism step: text LIFE to 20411 to register for the upcoming baptism weekend.
  • Join a Rooted group or Life Group to find a spiritual father or mother–or to become one.
  • Bring a physical Bible with pages to turn and mark, and a pen (optionally the 1 & 2 Timothy/Titus journal), each week of the series.
  • Fathers: schedule intentional time this week to pursue your children’s hearts and guard what shapes them.
  • Audit your family’s media and activity rhythms; remove influences that dull spiritual hunger.

Reflection Questions

  • Who has functioned as a spiritual father or mother to you? If no one, whom could you approach?
  • What priorities or influences in your home might be crowding out sincere faith?
  • Where do you still strive for God’s approval instead of receiving His grace and mercy?
  • What specific step is Jesus asking you (or your family) to take during this series?
  • How will you “fight the good fight” for your family or community this week?

Conclusion & Call to Response

  • The goal of the whole series is 2 Timothy 4:6-8: to finish life able to say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
  • Take your next step as a disciple–be baptized, join a discipling community, and actively fight the good fight in your family and world.
  • Rest in the Father’s unshakable grace, mercy, and peace instead of tying His love to your performance.

Prayer

  • Father, thank You for Your overflowing mercy that withholds judgment, Your marvelous grace that lavishes love, and Your perfect peace that steadies our hearts. Raise up mentors, parents, and friends among us who will speak life and model faith. Empower every believer here to take the next step of obedience, to fight for their families, and to live so that, like Paul, we can one day say we have fought the good fight and finished the race. In Jesus’ name, amen.
